Dearborn Seminary collection, 1854-1946.

Receipts, correspondence, and constitution of the Dearborn Seminary, constitution of the Dearborn Seminary Alumnae Association, and disbound books of meeting minutes including the press releases and invitations to meetings of the Alumnae Association (3 vol., 1900-1917, 1917-1946). The collection also contains a register of pupils (1856-1859), 1864 Register of Pupils, and a large grade book (1856-1899). The Dearborn Seminary was organized in 1854 as a college preparatory school for females under the charge of Zuinglius Grover. The school was reincorporated in 1899 and became affiliated with the University of Chicago.

Most of the records in the collection pertain to the $400,000 raised by the American Baptist Education Society in 1889-1890 in order to obtain a 600,000 grant from John D. Rockefeller for the creation of an endowment for the University of Chicago. The first volume in the inventory, Record of Pledges for the University of Chicago, contains an alphabetical numbered listing of subscribers, amounts pledged, and payments made through 1906.
